Far as I know, the broken column in medieval and later art symbolises ruin, death, and the loss of strength or stability, both physical and moral. Its meaning can shift slightly depending on the context, but it consistently conveys the idea of something once whole and upright that has now been cut short, destroyed, or left incomplete.
