The Magician embodies the apprentice. Although there is a long road to becoming a master, a learning path with its inherent trials, the young student is driven by curiosity and the thirst for knowledge.
It’s another common misconception that the Magician is “the Magician,” a completely developed master of occult knowledge and practice. The master is the Demiurge, commonly known as the High Priest or the Hierophant.
Traditionally depicted as a young person studying the four Elements symbolically laid upon a table, this is a clear indication of the Magician’s Neophyte status. He is learning about the Elements and studying how to control and use them. On the other hand, the master is obviously depicted in the Demiurge card.
The Magician is an Air card, it relates to learning and communication, while the Demiurge is an Earth card, which relates to practical matters. Clearly, the Demiurge is in control.
However, one cannot become a Demiurge without starting as a Magician.
Now, let’s look at the circumstances.
The past and fading influence is the Five of Wands. Usually, it represents a heated dispute, a conflict, or an encounter with the authorities. It may refer to a quarrel with a superior or even the Demiurge. However, regardless of the nature and nuances of the conflict, it has set you off on your learning journey, which, as a popular saying explains, every kick in the arse is a step forward.
The future? The reversed Two of Disks predicts some setbacks. It’s important not to let yourself become disheartened by possible developments. As I said, the learning process has its natural ups and downs. You will learn from your own mistakes and come out stronger.
Then again, the reversed Two of Disks is only a projection, a mistake that may happen. If you don’t like the result, you still have time to take a different approach and change the outcome.
The reversed Two of Disks can be corrected by the energies of the Two of Cups. Practically, instead of rushing into a mistake, as it’s predicted by the reversed Two of Disks, better rely on your emotions and the support of someone you trust, as the Two of Cups suggests.
