Reports circulating on social media announce that Meta is preparing for substantial layoffs, with plans to cut about 10% of its employees, amounting to roughly 8,000 staff members. It said it would also not fill thousands more open jobs it had been hiring for. Meta has already cut around 2,000 workers in two smaller rounds of layoffs this year.
A key reason for the layoffs is Meta’s increased spending in other areas of the company, including AI, for which it will spend $135 billion this year. This is approximately equal to the amount it has spent on AI in the previous three years combined.
A high-tech smart guy commented that those with impeccable resumes will find new jobs very quickly.
I seriously doubt it. If your work can be replaced by AI, your job will be lost sooner or later. It doesn’t matter if you’re a grocery store cashier or a software developer.
The only safe jobs are those that require human interaction, creative work, and physical labour. Human sensitivity and intuition cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence. Human creativity and ingenuity cannot be reproduced by artificial intelligence. There are also specific physical jobs that cannot be robotised or replaced by machines.
AI doesn’t create, only recreates based on preexisting models. It can sample and copy, but it can never generate something original without human input.
AI will only replace mediocrity. However, the issue we are facing is that most people are mediocre. If machines can take over their jobs, what will all those people do? Eventually, it will create a humanitarian crisis. Unless there is a plan to get rid of them. Another pandemic, or perhaps a war?
I am curious, what’s your opinion? Please leave your thoughts in the comments.
