– What should you focus on today?
– How can you turn discomfort into comfort?

It’s a bizarre and unpleasant deja vu. We are bouncing between the same couple of cards and running in the same circles.
What is the purpose of a Tarot reading?
To receive insight into the past, present, and possible future circumstances and options, make educated choices, and make significant changes.
However, making changes is the most inaccessible action to most humans.
Change is most often not possible because humans are afraid of the new and the unknown. The same old “better the devil you know” type of mindset prevents us from making profound and significant changes.
Implementing fundamental changes is challenging for humans, as it contradicts various deeply ingrained psychological, biological, and social systems designed to uphold stability and minimise risk.
First of all, the brain creates habits and routines to conserve energy. Changing them requires active decision-making and conscious and sustained effort, which consumes more mental resources.
Secondly, even if suboptimal, familiar situations feel safer than unknown alternatives. The brain often treats uncertainty as a threat.
Significant change often requires questioning who we are or how we see ourselves, which is psychologically destabilising. Even if we violently deny it, we love ourselves no matter what.
New behaviours or beliefs that conflict with long-held ones create internal tension, which we are wired to reduce. More often than not, people resist change rather than embrace it.
Just as the body resists physical changes, such as temperature or blood pressure, our brain and psyche strive to maintain psychological equilibrium. This is known as homeostasis and serves as a defence mechanism of the self.
Habits and routines are reinforced by dopamine and other reward systems. Altering them may result in losing those “rewards,” at least temporarily. The human brain thrives on comfort and despises effort. The routine, performing the same tasks mechanically without thought, represents an ideal status quo for our brain and psyche.
Fear, shame, and guilt can emerge when contemplating or attempting change, particularly if it involves failure or challenging social norms. Letting go of what we know, even if it is not beneficial for us, frequently entails loss and grief.
Humans are wired to avoid losses more than to seek gains. The greater the change, the higher the perceived risk of failure.
Like risk aversion, perfectionism, and self-doubt can obstruct progress, especially when the stakes feel personal.
The society and people around us often expect consistency in our identities and behaviour. Changing too much can jeopardise relationships and social standing. Societies tend to reinforce norms and discourage radical deviations, whether subtly or overtly.
Profound changes often take time to yield visible results. Consequently, this makes it more challenging to remain motivated, particularly in a world geared towards instant gratification.

That being said, it doesn’t matter what today’s card means to me, and what matters is what it means to you.
I would love to hear your thoughts and interpretations!
