Astronomically, Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the one is nearest to the Sun.
Mercury, in Astrology, is the ruler of Gemini and Virgo. Mercury represents reason, communication, connections and education, learning, respectively self-awareness. It is also associated with dexterity and agility of movement. Therefore, it is also related to short distance travelling and vacations.
Psychologically, Mercury represents the human desire to understand, communicate and learn.

In alchemy, it is usually associated with the sun and King.
The metal between the spirit and the body is the soul, which indeed is Sulphur.
Sulphur represents the self-conscious level.
